SOUTH TO NORTH guided 4×4 self drive SAFARI

Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta, Khwai, Savute, Chobe, Victoria Falls

Tour Type

Guided Self Drive Safari
Participation Camping

R 30 500 per person sharing

10 nights/11 days
Maun to Kasane

This adventure commences in Maun, passes through the magic of Moremi followed by Savute and Chobe, and ends in Kasane from where you fly out to your next destination.

To get the most out of these areas camping is ideal as it brings you so much closer to nature, and to add some more fun to proceedings self drivers are required to participate in the daily chores needed to make the safari a great success.

Fortunately these are not many and it leads to great teamwork and fantastic camaraderie.

Your guide will be on hand throughout and we will have many blissful evenings under the stars, preparing campfire meals, tasting good wine, chatting and eventually drift off into dreamland after yet another day of magic in the African bush.

After your arrival at Maun airport we collect your rented 4×4 vehicles and proceed to our campsite on the banks of the Thamalakane river, one amazing river teeming with wildlife, and a major source of water to numerous natural areas in Botswana (

Once the accommodation is set up we discuss our great adventure in finer detail and thereafter light up our campfire and have a long slow evening chatting and preparing dinner over the open fire, the first of many more to come.
Soon the day will be done and you can drift into a happy sleep, listening to the many night sounds you will experience everywhere as we go along.

This morning we prepare a light breakfast in camp after which I escort you to Maun Airport for an optional 1 hr scenic flight over the Okavango Delta.
To get a true perspective of this amazing Unesco world heritage site, I highly recommend this flight.
Upon your return we stop by local shops where we do our grocery shopping for the adventure ahead.
Around mid day we depart to Moremi Game Reserve which is a 2 hour drive and we might be lucky enough to see our first wildlife eg elephants, leopards, lion and wild dog
along the route!
After arrival at our campsite at South Gate we set up our camp, followed by a light lunch and a few hours at leisure where you can have a siesta, read a book or update your tour diary (
Late afternoon tea is followed by our first game drive and we hope to see some of the great beasts we have come from afar to see.
Dinner is enjoyed around campfire and we all participate in preparing this, our first meal in the African bush.
Camps are not fenced and we might have a visitor or two in the form of elephant, hyena or the like!

DAY 3 & 4
After an early morning game drive of the South Gate area we depart to North Gate campsite approximately 40km away and after setting up camp we prepare a well deserved brunch, followed by some time at leisure before our afternoon game drive and dinner (
Day four includes morning and afternoon game drives with great meals in between.

DAY 5,6 & 7
This is an exciting day as we move on to another magnificent camp, and this time its none other than Savute, my all time favorite camp in Botswana (
Savute is known for its many lion prides and we will do our best to see some of them during our 3 night stay.
The sand is thick, driving is slow and we might encounter wildlife along the way which makes this one of the most special transfers of the adventure for sure!
Upon arrival at our new campsite we have a couple of hours at leisure before we enjoy the first of 5 full game drives in this amazing place they call Savute!
Great days are followed by great campfire dinners, enjoyed under the stars, while listening to the sounds of the night, lion, hyena and jackal, all contributing to this amazing melody that will last well into the night and add that magical touch to days that will be remembered for many years to come.

An early rise is needed as we have a challenging day ahead!
After coffee its time to pack up and depart to Kasane where we will spend the final 3 nights of the adventure, camping next to the mighty Chobe river.
Today’s drive takes us through the Chobe Reserve as well as the protected Rhodesian teak forest, with most of the driving through some of the thickest sand you will find in all of Africa.. challenging but fun and we might even swop drivers if you like to try your hand at sand driving!
We arrive at our lodging at around 4pm and you have some free time to explore the camp, before our customary dinner around campfire (

Chobe Nature Reserve is our first activity today and we need an early rise to enter the park as soon after the gates have opened to ensure great sightings
after an amazing 3 hour game drive we pull into the picnic area on the river bank and enjoy a delicious brunch, whilst enjoying spectacular views of the mighty Chobe!
The Chobe National Park has an incredible wildlife population which includes lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, hyena, giraffe, kudu, sable, amazing bird life and many more.

One of the highlights of our safari happens this afternoon. At 3pm we board a large river boat for a 3 hour sunset cruise on the Chobe… this cruise is a top hit and you will be amazed at the abundance of wildlife in and around the river, truly spectacular!
A delicious dinner around campfire is a fitting end to another day in paradise…

DAY 10
The magical Victoria Falls is on the menu today and we depart Kasane at 7am for the 2 hour trip to the Falls, which includes a border crossing to enter Zimbabwe at the Gazungula border post.

After exploring the falls for the next three hours on foot, you are welcome to partake in an optional helicopter flight over the falls, where you get a much better perspective of the entire area and you will realize that the falls is just a small part of a much larger geological masterpiece.
We enjoy a delicious pizza is in town, before heading back to Kasane for our last evening on African soil.
Tonight we make sure our bonfire is huge and the dinner is 5 star as we celebrate the past 10 days which we are sure to remember for many years to come.

DAY 11
A final breakfast is followed by a visit to town for some curio shopping, before returning the vehicles to the hire depot and taking the short drive to Kasane Airport for our return flight home.

For those who want a real African safari this one is as authentic as it gets!
The campsites are all in the bush and animal interactions might well take place whilst camping.

On safaris like this, always expect the unexpected… on a recent safari to Moremi we were enjoying an early cup of coffee at camp before our game drive when a pack of wild dogs chased after 2 impala, virtually touching our chairs as they ran for life, hoping for an early breakfast, and not in the least bothered by our presence.

Another incident that springs to mind is a huge African python basking in the sun in Moremi, but in doing so blocking the two track road in such a way that there was no ways we could pass it!

Animal road blocks are pretty common when traveling these parts of the world and although elephants are the usual culprits, it could also be buffalo, giraffe, zebra or more.

This tour has so many highlights and numerous game drives in the best reserves Botswana has to offer.
