“We travelled with Africa’s Best Adventures with Altis as the guide, he is also the owner of the company. We were in Johannesburg for specific dates and so when I initially contacted him, I asked for a proposed itinerary to exactly match our dates and include some tent camping and walking safari. I loved the proposal he made spending typically a couple of days in each location and not having excessive driving times other than to/from the airport. Altis took care of all the reservations and I think came up with a fair price for the whole trip. The biggest concern was that we had to pay by bank transfer as they do not accept credit cards, it is a risk sending money this way and I was certainly happy when Altis showed up exactly as promised. However, Africa’s Best Adventures are a member of SATSA where his membership number is 2255, and provides some protections for your deposit as well as the expected level of professionalism of the provider. Our trip was a round trip flying to/from Johannesburg. The route took us to Eswatini (Swaziland) seeing two parks Hlane and Mkhaya before heading south back to South Africa and seeing Hluhluwe, iSimangaliso and Pongola. We loved each location and saw much wildlife including Lions, Elephant, Rhino, Hippo, Zebra, Giraffe, Python, Cheeta, Crocodiles and lots of birds. Altis, provided and cooked the majority of the meals; we have some dietary requirements which he fully embraced and shared he cooked some test meals in ahead of the trip, the outcomes were always excellent. Planning and timing are a huge positive, we knew each day the timings and other than one day where customs held us up for an hour it was amazingly accurate.
Game Drives were a mix of Altis driving us in the SUV, taking an open top 4*4 and a local guide plus we had two hiking safaris which I would highly recommend. Altis was a good as the local guides at finding and naming birds and animals and was willing to have extended drives, one morning it was nearly 6 hours driving in the park until we stopped for lunch.
Altis is a highly qualified nature guide who knows the history of the country, all birds and animals that you find on the tour. He works so hard on the tour, driving hours every day, cooking and organizing. The accommodation was a mixture of luxury private homes, game lodges and sleeping in the very comfortable tent on top of the trailer.
Overall a wonderful experience and we are hoping to return in the future, for another trip with Altis.”

“We recently had the most incredible experience on our first proper safari adventure. We were spoilt by Altis from the moment we set foot in Botswana.
The planning and preparation of these trips is amazing and every little detail is thought of. Our tents were much more spacious than I had anticipated. They had comfortable bedding, plenty of storage space and lots of mosquito nets so we could watch the animals whilst we sat in bed.
All the campsites were strategically chosen to be surrounded by great views and easy access to attractions nearby. The peace and tranquillity at the campsites make it that much more enjoyable. Listening to the different animal noises throughout the night is such an experience.
Dinners were one of the highlights. It was quite entertaining to plan and find the ingredients we needed along our route. Altis made lots of local dishes and ensured there was variety in what we ate. His homemade cottage pie and bobotie were to die for. We mentioned we loved snoek pate so he went out of his way to find a snoek to Braai on one of our last nights. This was spectacular!
The Okavango Delta was such a beautiful experience. We stayed in a lodge right by the edge of the lagoon. Our boat trips around the lagoon were amazing and we even spotted a sitatunga. The sunsets here were out of this world.
On the game drives in Chobe, Moremi and Makgadikgadi we were in awe with the number of animals we saw. We saw plenty of elephants, zebra, giraffes, lions, hippos and buffalos. We were also very lucky to come across some leopards. Altis is very knowledgeable about everything, including flora, local customs and cultures. He is like a walking encyclopedia! He also had so many books which showcased the different animals we could find, and we ticked off quite a few. His interactive bird book is unique and plays the corresponding bird sound so you can see which one you have heard. We also did some stargazing where Altis showed us how to find different constellations and navigate using the stars.
The drives never became boring as we always had something to chat about whilst we passed different animals, landscapes, ecosystems and villages along the route.
We were so happy with our trip that we have already started planning our trip with him next year to Namibia. If you are still thinking about it, just go with it, you will not regret it!”

“My 80-year-old mother and I recently returned from a breathtaking two-week exploration of Namibia, and the success of this trip owes everything to our extraordinary guide, Altis Kriel. Altis’s extensive knowledge of the region and his careful planning made this an unforgettable journey. I cannot even begin to express my awe at the beauty of Namibia and the massive number of photographs that I took does not even do it justice.
Some of our personal highlights were: the Sossusvlei area with its spectacular Dunes – where you feel like you are in a different world and of course Etosha – where there is plenty of wildlife just a few meters away from your car. We were very lucky with all the animals that we saw, my favourite being the herds of elephants (especially the calves) as well as few rare sightings – Altis was amazing in his ability to spot animals in thick bush, as well as being able to name every bird that we saw along the way.

His vast knowledge of the history, geology, and local culture enriched every location we visited and we learnt so much along the way. “We went on a fantastic trip from Joburg out to Eswatini and some of the reserves in the Eastern coast. It was well balanced between a few days camping in some great locations, and some days staying at some really lovely lodges (something we had requested).
The activities that we were able to do(safari drives, walking safaris and a boat trip) were all excellent leading to some incredible experiences and Altis’s knowledge of the places we were traveling and the wildlife around us really elevated this trip. “Our plan to visit Namibia had been in the making for a while but the format of the trip (bus, solo, guide) and the exact regions to visit were something we were not sure about. We were lucky enough to come across Altis’s website for Africa’s Best Adventures which was very well made and gave a lot of details about the proposed route and the sites (with pictures).
After a video call with Altis, we decided to go ahead and book our trip with him, which was an excellent decision! From the beginning, Altis was very responsive to our questions and requests about the trip and he was able to arrange all of the details for us in advance in a very organized way. This removed a lot of potential stress from us about trying to deal with all of this from Canada.
The trip itself was absolutely amazing! We followed Altis with our rented camping 4×4 on a trajectory that Altis had designed for us. Altis has an incredible knowledge of botany and wildlife and he helped us appreciate so much of what we saw through his insight. He was always very cheerful with a great sense of humour that made the entire trip so much fun. It is clear that he is really passionate about exploring (and protecting) the natural beauty of Namibia and South Africa.
Even if you feel confident enough to travel through Namibia yourself, doing so with a professional guide like Altis will make the same trip so much more interesting; we would have missed many details otherwise! “Where to start hey, what an amazing trip. We have just finished a 13 day tour of Botswana with Altis and Africa’s Best Adventures. Altis was an extremely friendly, personable, knowledgeable and skilled guide/driver who shared with us his passion for getting out amongst it and all things nature.
His ability to ensure that each day had something to look forward to was admirable and made for a thrilling journey that had us jumping out of bed ready for what was install.
The itinerary was thoroughly planned out for our schedule, and demonstrated Altis’s intimate knowledge of the area and allowed for the perfect amount of time at each destination.
Each day our tastebuds were also entertained with delicious meals and there was lots of variety too. We had so many unforgettable wildlife encounters thanks to Altis and our local guide Baitsholedi (B-man), who through skill (or luck) had us in the right place at the right time.

“My husband and I were blessed to experience a 24 day camping safari from Cape Town SA up, down and across Namibia with Altis of Africa’s Best Adventures. We’ve camped before in the USA for up to a week, but never for this long and never in Africa.
It was an amazing adventure and a truly rewarding experience. The communication from Altis from the beginning was great. He provided lots of options on length of trip, locations/countries to visit, types of accommodations and route depending on our budget and ALL of the top notch equipment. We opted for the most magnificent exploration of Namibia camping for 24 wonderful days. The days just flew by.
Altis was the master when it came to planning our route, packing, driving, cooking (oh the cooking) and the greatest teacher throughout our trip on the vastly different landscapes, all the animals and birds and even the stars. Everyday brought new surprises, beautiful scenery, the coolest animal sightings on safari, fun lunch spots en route, magnificent sunsets with sundowners and the most delicious fireside dinners.

“We had an absolutely amazing 24-day safari through Namibia and South Africa with Africa’s Best Adventures. Altis (the owner) provides customized safaris for each client. We chose mostly camping accommodations at sites with full facilities but spent the first and last night in a nice lodge. Our adventure was hands-on, where we helped setup and tear down the tents each day, in addition to help with cooking and cleanup each night. Altis was amazing in planning all of the meals and cooking them over a braai, which is a South African barbecue. The homemade bread cooked in a pot was simply amazing. We especially enjoyed dinner and sundowners each night, as we discussed the day’s highlights.
Each morning, Altis was up early preparing for the day’s adventure. We knew it was our time to get moving, when we could hear the water boiling for coffee and tea. Altis planned so many incredible destinations and performed all of the driving from start to finish. We were very relaxed knowing that he had been to all of the destinations before. Altis is also an incredible safari guide, who knows how to find elusive animals including cheetahs and lions, as well as smaller game like cats and owls hiding in trees.
There were so many incredible highlights on this trip, from Fish River Canyon (the world’s second largest behind the Grand Canyon) and wild horses of the Namib desert, to Sesriem Deadvlei and Big Daddy Dune (the second tallest dune in Namibia), to the hundreds of thousands of seals that have made Cape Cross home, to feeding wild porcupines, to the incredible Epupa Falls Lodge right on the Kunene River, which separates Namibia and Angola. We ended the trip with 3 amazing nights in Etosha National Park Namibia, and 3 nights in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the Kalahari in South Africa.

“We did a great safari from December 26 to January 6, 2023.
From the start it was great. Altis was right on time to pick us up, with his huge car, and in the afternoon we were already in Pilanesberg. Even had time for a game drive. Altis is a very pleasant and knowledgeable driver (also on unpaved roads) and knows an incredible amount about nature. He also makes you enthusiastic by following all kinds of tracks of the animals. “Itching for a new adventure in the bush, we recently decided to do a camping trip in the Kgalagadi. With no equipment, know-how or skills we decided to do the trip with Altis from @africas best adventures and start off on our journey of discovery.
Mike’s always wanted to take photos in the Kgalagadi and after chatting to so many photographic and bush loving friends we decided it was time.
We are so happy with the decision we made travel with a private guide who has done numerous trips to the Kgalagadi and throughout Africa before, the experience @africas best adventures brought to the trip really was what made it so comfortable and enjoyable.
Matt cooked up delicious meals from kudu burgers to cottage pie and we were never left feeling hungry. The tents are comfortable, solid and much easier to set up than I expected. We had a few very windy and wet storms on our trip and the tent didn’t budge an inch, and there was no leaking whatsoever.
Comfy stretchers are provided to sleep on so you can have a good nights rest and be ready for your early morning game drives. Altis is an experienced guide and extremely knowledgeable about everything including the wildlife, bird life, the geography of the area and the flora, so you really can learn so much too. Altis and Matt are also great with people and super easy to get along with and we spent many nights drinking wine and chatting around the fire.
The Kgalagadi is greener than it’s been in years so instead of the dessert dunes we were expecting, we were welcomed with greenery everywhere, still so extremely beautiful though and a rare occurrence that we were grateful to witness. The ablution facilities are clean and well laid out at all the camps and never seem over crowded or busy at any one time. There’s also a shop at each camp where you can buy anything from wine and chocolates to toiletries and little souvenirs.
We travel to a lot of beautiful lodges and have become accustomed to luxury but there’s something so raw and exciting about sleeping in a tent in the wild, getting up while it’s still a bit dark and driving through the reserve in search of whatever decides to cross your path. And with Africa’s Best Adventures you have the flexibility to go for as long as you like, there’s no rigid schedules, they prefer to let the client take the lead
It’s all about luck and being in the right place at the right time but these guides were also great at looking for animal tracks and behaviour that could lead us to an interesting sighting.
We managed to spot a female leopard at the top of a mountain and followed her for over an hour as we could see she was on the hunt, Two young Cubs following closely. We waited, watched, predicted her every move and we’re in the prime position to see her take down a springbok.
We can’t wait for our next adventure with these guys, hopefully to Namibia and Botswana where they have also guided tours many times before.

“What an amazing life changing six nights spent camping in the Kgalagadi with my fiance and Africas Best Adventures. Two nights at Mata Mata and four nights at Twee Rivieren. Both camps were amazingly clean and tidy and well run.
Our first visit to the Kgalagadi and our first camping experience and “yes” we did fall in love with both. Caroline was however very pleased not to see any scorpions, snakes, or spiders in or around out tent, even though we knew they were most likely still around.
It was incredibly green, some say greener than in 50 years. As it was our first visit, we couldn’t really compare the feel of what the landscape looks like in the dry season, but we will definitely be visiting again to see a different landscape.
Thanks so much to our hosts Altis and Matthew for being absolute professionals and making the trip so enjoyable and comfortable for us. The food and wine was outstanding and far beyond anything we expected while camping. The game drives were action packed and Altis shared his vast knowledge of the bush and environment with us throughout the trip. The brunch stops at the special picnic sites were also so much fun and very relaxing.
Sightings were outstanding, although we had to work harder for them than some other reserves it was very rewarding to see what we did. Especially two big male lions up so close as well as witnessing a cheetah killing a springbok right next to the road with her two cubs by her side.
All in all a very special experience and I can’t wait to visit again soon one day! Altis we will definitely be making contact for our next bucket list trips to Namibia and Botswana!”
