PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARIS
In Southern Africa
OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARIS
When I think of a photographic safari in Africa, I get excited by the incredible number of wildlife as well as cultural offerings there are available to photographers of all levels throughout the year, in so many different locations in Southern Africa.
Providing you the photographer with great wildlife opportunities is our passion and our preferred playground is Moremi, Savute, and Chobe National Park, mostly in the water rich areas of Botswana and all are rated as some of the most spectacular wildlife areas on earth, although most of our safaris can be adapted to suit photographic needs.
We plan your photographic safari with your exact requirements in mind. We focus on the above mentioned destinations as it offers such exceptional opportunities to get that perfect shot. Moremi being in the incredible Okavango Delta, followed by dry area Savute and finally the Chobe National Park, situated on the banks of the mighty Chobe river, one of Botswana’s most wildlife rich rivers by far.
To enable you to have maximum photo opportunities as well as being really close to nature, camping in the wild as far as possible is recommended.
We therefore spend 6 nights in unfenced wilderness camps of Moremi and Savute and the remaining 3 in a partially fenced camp on the banks of the Chobe river.
The roads we travel up to Chobe are mostly off the beaten track, sand tracks and as far from civilization as can be (we do travel with sat phones though). The 3 above areas have such an incredible selection of wildlife that it is almost impossible to mention it all. From the smallest beetle to the mighty elephant, all the carnivores, countless antelope species, crocodiles, hippos, 450 bird species and many more.
Daily game drives will commence at dawn and last until 11am, when we return to base for a delicious brunch. While out there your guide will ensure that you have as many photo opportunities as possible and actively search for the great shots you have come to Africa for. After some midday free time where you can grab a nice shower, download pictures or just relax, we enjoy a refreshment at 3pm before we proceed with the next game drive of the day. This time we select a different route and we stay out there until 6 pm to capture those perfect moments during ‘golden hour’ as the sun sets when we return to camp for a delicious campfire dinner, expertly prepared by your host.
The majority of our game drives during your safari will be in a large 4×4 SUV with a window seat for optimum views, but it also includes 2 boat cruises on the mighty Chobe river – one being on a smaller, fully equipped photographic boat, whilst the second one is a sundowner cruise on a large boat, which has an upper deck from where you can get great shots from a higher position as well.
We always like to think of the photography as being 50% of your safari, with the remaining 50 being the experience itself. Being in such a wonderland, sleeping under the stars, listening to the beautiful night sounds, experiencing a hyena walking through camp, enjoying good food prepared over our campfire, accompanied by a glass of crisp white wine… and finally dreaming of tomorrow where more excitement awaits.
Other destinations for photography include South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. We will gladly includes highlights such as Victoria Falls or Cape Town on your itinerary to make the most of your time in Africa.
