Maun to Maun
Our Botswana camping tours are the ultimate participation wildlife package for small groups and photographers. This 14 day participation wildlife adventure commences and concludes in Maun, Botswana and is aimed at visitors who wants to roughen it while on safari as well as photographers who want to spend most of their time in the bush, rather than in lodges.
We camp in unfenced camps every night, have great campfire dinners and spend as much time as possible out on game drives, looking for those elusive creatures we have come to see.
ROUTE: BOTSWANA CAMPING TOURS (MAUN-MAUN)
DAY 1
After collecting you at Maun International Airport we depart to Crocodile Camp our destination for tonight and the start of your Botswana camping tour.
We set up camp under a shady camel thorn tree before we spend an hour or so discussing the logistics of our much anticipated adventure commencing at daybreak tomorrow, after which a team effort campfire dinner is prepared whilst we enjoy a melody of night sounds from some of the wild animals nearby.
DAY 2
After a 5am wake up call and a hot coffee we commence on our way to South gate campsite, Moremi, for our first night in the wild.
Upon arrival at our campsite we prepare a warm morning brunch and afterwards spend he next few hours relaxing before afternoon tea to be followed by a two to three hour game drive, hoping to see some of the wild ones that roam here.
DAY 3 & 4
Today we move camp and travel a short distance to North Gate campsite, where we spend the next two evenings.
Activities are similar to South gate with the only exception being a lot more water in the north gate area as we are camping virtually on the edge of the delta.
Here we are guaranteed many very good wildlife sightings ranging from mongoose all the way through to elephant.
DAY 5, 6 & 7
This is an exciting day as we move on to another magnificent camp, and this time its none other than Savute, my all time favorite camp in Botswana.
Savute is known for its many lion prides and we will do our best to see some of them during our 3 night stay.
The sand is thick, driving is slow and we might encounter wildlife along the way which makes this one of the most special transfers of the adventure for sure!
Upon arrival at our new campsite we have a couple of hours at leisure before we enjoy the first of 5 full game drives in this amazing place they call Savute!
Great days are followed by great campfire dinners, enjoyed under the stars, while listening to the sounds of the night, lion, hyena and jackal, all contributing to this amazing melody that will last well into the night and add that magical touch to days that will be remembered for many years to come.
DAY 8
An early rise is needed as we have a challenging day ahead!
After coffee its time to pack up and depart to Kasane where we will spend the final 3 nights of the adventure, camping next to the mighty Chobe river.
Today’s drive takes us through the Chobe reserve as well as the protected Rhodesian teak forest, with most of the driving through some of the thickest sand you will find in all of Africa..challenging but fun and we might even swop drivers if you like to try your hand at sand driving!
We arrive at our lodging at around 4pm and you have some free time to explore the camp, before our customary dinner around campfire.
DAY 9
Chobe Nature reserve is our first activity today and we need an early rise to enter the park as soon after the gates have opened to ensure great sightings.
After an amazing 3 hour game drive we pull into the picnic area on the river bank and enjoy a delicious brunch, whilst enjoying spectacular views of the mighty Chobe! The Chobe National Park has an incredible wildlife population which includes lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, hyena, giraffe, kudu, sable, amazing bird life and many more.
One of the highlights of our safari happens this afternoon. At 3pm we board a large river boat for a 3 hour sunset cruise on the Chobe…
This cruise is a top hit and you will be amazed at the abundance of wildlife in and around the river, truly spectacular!
A delicious dinner around campfire is a fitting end to another day in paradise…
DAY 10
The magical Victoria falls is on the menu today and we depart Kasane at 7am for the 2 hour trip to the Falls, which includes a border crossing to enter Zimbabwe at the Gazungula border post.
After exploring the falls for the next three hours on foot, you are welcome to partake in an optional helicopter flight over the falls, where you get a much better perspective of the entire area and you will realize that the falls is just a small part of a much larger geological masterpiece.
On completion of the falls we enjoy a locally prepared pizza in town, before heading back to Kasane for another campfire dinner under the stars.
DAY 11
Yet another wonderful breakfast is enjoyed before we depart in a southerly direction where we overnight at Elephant Sands, a lodge known for the many elephants frequenting the watering hole at the lodge.
You will be able to watch these great beasts having a drink from the comfort of your safari tent whilst enjoying a sundowner after an another exciting day in Botswana.
DAY 12 and 13
This morning we enjoy a relaxed breakfast, hoping to see more elephants passing close by our tent, before traveling to Khumaga campsite, inside the Makgadikgadi Nature reserve, another of Botswana’s best reserves.
The park has an wonderful array of wildlife with giraffe, elephant, hippo, crocs, lion, and hyena to name but a few.
We will have two afternoon and one morning in the park before returning to Maun where our adventure started 2 weeks ago.
DAY 14
We pack up this morning for the final leg of our Botswana camping tour, a 2 hour drive back to civilization and if we have enough time you can enjoy a scenic flight over the delta, before we depart for Maun airport where you will board the flight returning you to your home.
You may prefer to spend one final evening on African soil and perhaps this time you prefer a fancy lodge after all the wonderful evenings camping out in the bush!
What Altis says about this safari
If ever there was a complete wildlife package, this Botswana camping tour is it!
Let me take you safely through all the obstacles you might encounter, teach you as much as you might like to know about the animals, plants, geology, the astronomy, preparing campfire meals and much more.
Needless to say if roughing it up and wildlife is your scene, look no further, it doesn’t get better than this!
These Botswana camping tours are an adventure in every sense of the word and a wonderful opportunity for the adventurist as well as photographers to experience maximum wildlife exposure and a huge adrenaline rush from start to finish.
We will travel on some of the most daunting sand tracks Africa can throw at you and negotiate a number of serious water crossings, but we will handle it as it comes and have fun doing it as we go along.
